The Complete Genmitsu Laser Guide – Part 3: Compatibility and Control

After installing the laser and configuring LightBurn, it’s time to ensure that your Genmitsu CNC machine is fully compatibleboth electrically and mechanically — with your laser system. In this part of the guide, we'll explain:

  • Which Genmitsu models are laser-ready

  • What firmware features are required

  • How PWM control works with Genmitsu boards

  • What to avoid for long-term stability and safety

🧩 Is My Genmitsu Compatible with a Laser?

The good news: Most Genmitsu machines are laser-upgradable.

Confirmed Compatible Models:

  • Genmitsu 3018-PRO

  • Genmitsu 3018-PROVer

  • Genmitsu 3018-PROVer Mach3

  • Genmitsu 4030-PRO (with PWM pin access)

These models all run on GRBL-based controllers, which support PWM output and are widely compatible with diode lasers.

Does My Controller Support PWM?

PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is essential for controlling laser power through software. You’ll usually find it on:

  • The spindle control header (3-pin or 4-pin)

  • Labeled as S”, PWM”, or “Spindle”

You’re ready if your board has:

  • PWM output (S or spindle pin)

  • Shared GND

  • External power input (12V or 24V for laser module)

These signals are what our laser kits are built to connect with directly — no hacking required.

What to Avoid

  • Don’t power the laser directly from Genmitsu’s stock 12V/2A adapterit's not powerful or stable enough.

  • Avoid using old GRBL firmware (< 1.1f)laser mode won’t work reliably.

  • Don’t exceed your controller’s current limits — always use a dedicated power supply for the laser.

🧠 Understanding PWM Signal Scaling

GRBL uses a numerical value (0 to $30) to scale laser power:

  • $30=1000 means max PWM = 1000

  • In LightBurn, the S-value max” must match this number

This ensures 100% in LightBurn equals full power on your laser.

🧪 Fine-Tuning Control

If you're seeing weak engraving or inconsistent cuts:

  • Check your $32=1laser mode ON

  • Ensure $30 = LightBurn S-value

  • Use Line Mode for engraving speed tests

  • Use air assist for clean plywood cuts

If your controller isn’t responding to PWM correctly, contact our support team — we can help you verify the signal with a multimeter or oscilloscope.
