Product Description

Summary

This driver designed to operate high power NIR laser diodes, including devices in series or stacked. It has a modulation bandwidth of 5kHz.  (Note that there is also a version with 20kHz modulation bandwidth.) It can be used to operate 20, 40 or 60W CS-mount 808nm, 940nm and 980nm as well as other similar laser diodes.

 

With this driver, it is possible to power one or several laser diodes in series or one diode stack, which tend to have higher operating voltages. (Refer to formula below for calculating PSU voltage.)


A separate laser diode supply voltage input and logic input voltage minimizes the switch-on resistance of a power MOSFET. The inner layer of the heatsink is made of copper to better facilitate the transfer of heat. The outer body of a heatsink, machined from Aluminium, is isolated from all signals on the driver including the ground. This allows mounting the driver directly to a metal heat sink if additional cooling is required.

 

The modulation input can be used as a TTL input with logic levels of 0V and 5V or as an analog input. The analog modulation is linear over the range of 0 – 5V.  For example, if 2.5V is applied to the analog input, the output current is 50% of the maximum current; 4V results in 80% of maximum current, etc.  Analog input allows for modulation of the current through the diode at a frequency up to 20 kHz. There are two potentiometers on the unit that can be used to set values of maximum laser diode and DC bias (offset) current.
 
Included with the driver are connectors that can be used for the power supply and control inputs.  M5 cap screws are also provided for attaching the driver to a mounting surface such as a heat sink. This product contains is a current monitor output connection for measuring the current through the laser diode while it is operated. The output has a transfer function of 10mV/1A.

 

 

Recommendations and Requirements

The allowable supply voltage range depends on the quantity of laser diodes used in series, but it should be no higher than 3V more than required by the laser diodes.  For one laser diode having an operating voltage of approximately 2V, the maximum PSU voltage should not exceed 5V. For two diodes which operating voltage is around 4V, maximum diode input is 7V and so on. Therefore, the maximum input voltage is given by the formula:
     VCC DIODE MAX = (Number of diodes in series) X (Each diode’s operating voltage) + 3V


Always power the logic with 12V before powering up the diode line. Because GND of the diode line and GND of the logic input are connected in the driver, always remember to connect GND of the diode line directly to the GND of a PSU.

 
Always use high quality power supply unit with low ripple voltage. It is suggested to add a large capacitor between the PSU is recommended, but it depends on PSU, wires cross-section and their length. The capacitor used for our tests was 10,000uF / 25V. 

 
It is necessary to be careful when assembling not to cause a short circuit between the +VCC of the power supply and –GND of the logic input or monitor input. Doing so can cause the ground logic paths to be irreparably damaged.
 

Due to the high current through its components, we minimized the voltage drop of the driver and did not add reverse polarity protection. If this is a concern to customers, a protection device mounted close to the laser diode can be used.

 

 

Protections
The driver's body is isolated from all signals of the driver and can be mounted directly to metal heatsinks or other metal parts.
 
The analog input is protected by a 5V1 Zener diode on occasion there appears the voltage higher than 5V. In spite of this, the input should not be used with higher voltages.
